Spring has Arrived!

Author: wineblog, April 22, 2009

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

The skies are finally clear, the sun is out, and the temperature is rising! Certainly this glorious weather deserves celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with a glass (or two) of fine wine?

Along with the return of songbirds and flower buds, this spring we have the honor of introducing many new wines. This exciting new line up includes a wide variety of exquisite French and Argentinean offerings.

FROM ARGENTINA:

NAIARA WINESspecializes in producing some of the best Malbecs Argentinahas to offer. They have mastered the art creating the classic Malbec, from a combination of hand harvested 15 and 80 year old vines. NAIARA WINES offers two approaches to the traditional varietal of Malbec. The Malbec Traditional (Gold Cap) and the Malbec Reserva (Silver Cap) demonstrate the true ability of producing quality wines from Argentina.

NAIARA entered the U.S.in 2007 with a phenomenal debut being rated as one of “The Best Buys in Malbec” by world famous wine critic Robert Parker. Accomplishing the status of “The Best Buys in Malbec” from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the Malbec Traditional received 88 points and the Malbec Reserva received 90+ points.

FROM FRANCE:

CHATEAU  ROUTAS abounds in the agricultural diversity that is key to vine health. The estate’s 260 hectares encompass wheat fields and olive trees, and black truffles stud the earth. Red poppies give way to brilliant yellow sunflowers, and in the fall, the surrounding forests yield abundant mushrooms-cepes (porcini), fragile girolles, and morels. Helpful insects play their part in keeping the vines disease-free. The terrain is punctuated by a stunning geological anomaly, the 885-deep Infernet Hole (Devil’s Hole), a canyon thought to have been created by a meteor collision. The hole is a favorite refuge of the local wild boars, which are unfortunately a little too fond of the Chateau Routas grapes!

As in all the best properties, the Chateau Routas soil varies dramatically, resulting in small vineyards that are often unusually shaped. Some plots are red as crushed brick, while others are of crumbly grey limestone mixed with bright red stones that bleach in the hot summer sun. At 1,300 feet above sea level, the elevation is  among the appellation’s highest, providing cool nights that slow the ripening  of the grapes, contributing complexity and dictating harvests that are up to a month  later than those below.

DOMAINE JESSIUAME :Impossible to miss, the small jewel of Domaine Jessiaume sits welcomingly at the entrance to the tiny spa town of Santenay. Built in 1850, it comprises over 37 acres, with a large plot in Santenay, important holdings in the Premiers Crus Auxey Duresses Les Ecusseaux and Volnay Les Brouillards vineyards, and a terrific section of the Cent Vignes vineyard, just behind the city of Beaune. The Jessiaumes are, in fact, the biggest landowners in Santenay. Domaine Jessiaume established their negociant business Maison Jessiaume in 2008 and a formidable reputation as a small negociant eleveur of unparalleled quality has been formed to compliment the existing Domaine holdings.

February Wine Picks

Author: wineblog, February 3, 2009

Happy Valentine’s Day! February can often become just another forgettable month of cold, ice, and snow…Don’t let that happen this year! This short winter month has not one, not two, but three holidays! Valentine’s, President’s Day, and Mardi Gras are all great excuses to go out and drink wine, and we highly recommend you take advantage of them all! To get the festivities started, we’re offering up some of our most exciting special occasion wines–at huge discounts! Contact your sales rep for details. Cheers!

GAGLIARDO MOSCATO LA VILLA

This excellent La Villa wine, carefully crafted from the finest Italian Moscato grapes, will be the perfect complement to your romantic Valentine’s Day. Light, sweet, and just the slightest tart taste of tangerines makes it very delicate. This fresh, annual white pairs well with a wide range of desserts—try it with baked pears or apple pie. “Villa M” Moscato grapes are picked early, following a soft pressing; the wine is kept in stainless steel tanks at near freezing temperatures to arrest any additional fermentation. The wonderful end result is a distinctive sweet wine with fruity perfume and low alcohol. Hints of almond, melon and ripe stone fruit tickle the nose. Delightfully small bubbles, pear, melon, passion fruit and crisp apple tones, which are perfect with pastries, fruits, custards and long-fermented cheeses. This sweet elegant wine will truly make any occasion sparkle. From recent studies of genetic ampelography it would seem that Moscato was the forefather of all grapes, the first to cultivated, from which all the other varieties currently grown or known are said to descend. It is said to have originated in Greece, but over the centuries Moscato adapted to the soils of Piedmont very well, giving birth to a particular variety, later to become better known as Moscato Bianco di Canelli.

MAJOR SAVINGS alert!

::: ONLY FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY: LA VILLA PRIce slashed! see catalog for details :::

PALLADINO BRACHETTO D’AQUI

This is a sweet, sparkling wine with a clear bright ruby color. It tickles the tongue and tantalizes the senses. A delicate musky bouquet ramps up with hints of rose petals and then an explosion of dripping, ripe raspberries envelops the mouth…. finishing with a sweet, soft herbaceous aromatic finish. Delightful and vivacious, the Palladino Brachetto d’Acqui can also be enjoyed with strawberries, fruit salads and a wide range of desserts. Soft and appealing, it may be enjoyed as a delicious aperitif or as an after dinner sparkler.

VINA LA ROSA LA PALMA MERLOT RISERVA

Intense violet red color. A ripe and intensely fruity wine. Smooth and easy drinking, but packed with strong cassis, soft mint, and a particularly strong plum flavor. Serve at room temperature. Enjoy it on its own, as a superb sippng wine; but it is at its best with grilled red meat, lamb chops, casseroles, or mature cheeses. It makes delicious drinking now, as a young wine, but can be cellared for many years from vintage if stored horizontally in a cool dark place. Once open, enjoyed within two days; this wine also has great aging potential. ON SALE, SEE CATALOG FOR DETAILS

January Wine Picks

Author: wineblog, January 23, 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR

from Ferreus! We hope the new year finds you all in good health and keeping warm. We are excited to present to you our picks for the month of January:

JANUARY WINE PICKS

January is traditionally the coldest month of the year, so our picks this month include two wines to combat the frigid temperatures! These wintry months typically see a high incidence of the common cold—and what better way to prevent getting sick than by taking advantage of the powerful antioxidants found in red wine? Enjoy our picks below, and drink a toast to good health!

Once open, enjoyed within two days.

VINA LA ROSA LA PALMA LA CAPITANA CARMENERE

Deep red with violet tinge. Attractive varietal characters of spicy plums, cherries and blueberry. A complex nose with sweet vanilla from oak maturation. A smooth rounded palate structure with plums tones and subtle vanilla mocha and spicy oak. Soft and round tannins with a fine balance that complements the lingering flavors. Matured for 9 months in new and second use, French oak barrels. Serve at room temperature. Perfect with steak, meat stews, poultry with rich brown sauces, pork loin, duck, and even chocolate desserts. It makes delicious drinking now, as a young wine, but can be cellared for 3-4 years from vintage if stored horizontally in a cool dark place. Once open, enjoyed within two days.

TENUTA TERRA ROSSA OLTRE

This blend of Sangiovese Grosso and Merlot (Boudreaux style) allows both grapes to contribute to the most economical and  aged Super Tuscan from Tuscany. Sangiovese Grosso is the juice that makes Brunello. The grapes come from the single vineyards in Montalcino and Saint Antimo. A brilliant ruby color introduces an array of aromas including vanilla, warm plum and blackberries. A symphony of cassis, huckleberries, brown spices, minerals and black cherries on the tongue. Smooth, inky, and rich. Great structure. Supple mouth feel with a good balance of ripe sweet fruit and acidity. Easy drinking with soft, even, smooth tannins. Aged in oak for 12 months and aged in bottle for two years and then released. This is one of the very few Super Tuscans that is aged for three years before being released. The vintner, Rudolfo Cosimi is renowned for producing Brunello ratings in the nineties.
